At Active, our physiotherapists are well aware of the importance of prevention, monitoring and early intervention for any signs of lymphoedema that may arise with breast cancer treatment. Without adding to our client’s fears, we take a gentle but proactive approach to make sure that you are aware of, and able to respond to any early signs.
While we do not provide a comprehensive service for managing established and complex lymphoedema, our team assist in helping our clients understand, monitor and manage any early signs. For more complex care, we work with other specialised lymphoedema professionals in the community.

What is Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is swelling that can occur in the arm, breast, or chest area after breast cancer treatment. It happens when lymph fluid builds up due to surgery or radiation affecting the lymphatic system.
While not everyone develops lymphoedema, recognising it early and seeking support can help you manage symptoms effectively and prevent progression.
Signs of Lymphoedema - What to Watch Out For
- Swelling in your arm, hand, breast, or chest wall
- A feeling of heaviness or tightness in the limb
- Aching, discomfort, or reduced flexibility
- Jewellery, clothing, or sleeves feeling tighter than usual
- Changes in the texture of your skin
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Research shows that appropriate exercise, skin care, and early management are key to living well with or preventing lymphoedema.
Our physiotherapists have additional training in early detection, treatment, and prevention of lymphoedema. Our approach includes:
- Early Monitoring: Regular assessments to catch swelling early when it’s most treatable.
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage: A gentle, specialised massage technique that encourages the movement of lymph fluid.
- Exercise Prescription: Specific exercises and routines that stimulate lymphatic flow without overloading your arm.
- Compression Therapy: Guidance on the safe use of compression sleeves or garments if needed.
- Education and Self-Management: Teaching you strategies to minimise your risk, such as skin care, activity modifications, and monitoring.
